I went to the beach yesterday and got really bad sunburn.I cant wear a shirt because it rubs against my back and shoulders.I cant touch my face because it is raw.I cant sleep because the sheets hurt my back so bad.I was just wondering if I should go to the doctor?I cant even move my arms above shoulder length.I took a cool bath and put aloe on it, but even the aloe burns when I rub it on.should I go to the doctor or just stick with it til it goes away?

Well, I have a hefty amount of my Irish and Welsh ancestry built into my skin and I have dealt with sunburns similar to yours. I have had blistering that looked like something from a horror movie. The best thing for you to do is to continue the aloe and the cold showers for a few days. Make sure that you don't have any dark patches of burn though.... these would need a doctor. A dark spot would look 'charred' and soot-like.

Get some First Aid Spray with benzocaine in it. This will numb the burn and help you put on clothes or sleep at night. I hate to say it, but this is a hard lesson in the wearing of much more sun block. It will take a few days to feel any better and up to a week or more to really heal completely.

Yes, I would suggest going to the doctor and getting a prescription of Atarax for the pain and Silvadene creme for the burn. Both work wonders and will have you up and running in a day.

Atarax is sedating, and Silvadene is just an antibacterial cream. By the time you get an MD appt the worst will be over. If it's just bright pink and peeling I would keep going the way you are.

I worked as a swimming instructor when I was in high school and forgot my sunblock the first day- 8 hours in the blazing sun, and I HAD to go back day after day with the burn. I used baby diaper rash cream. It's soothing and blocks the sun rays with the zinc oxide. I looked kind of silly but I felt a whole lot better.
