Yes, even though your friends think he is a geek you really don't need to listen to them. Just go with him and if your friends still say bad things then have a long chat with those friends of yours!

if these 'friends' of yours are really friends then they will accept your decision to go out with him, and just because he is a 'geek' doesnt really mean anything, if you care for him and so does he then the relationship is worth it

It sounds like you don't deserve him. The fact the you even considered dumping him because you have superficial friends is a clear-cut sign that you aren't worth his time.
