Why is he sending mixed messages?

I have been talking to this guy for about 3 weeks. We have such a good time together and have enjoyed getting to know each other. We have gotten physical, so there is an attraction there. But my questions is this...He talks about another woman in front of me of how he would just like to be "with her". This was kinda a turn off to me because we have only been talking for a few weeks. So I made the comment maybe we should be friends because he doesn't seem that interested in wanting a relationship. (Which I am totally fine with if he just needs to see what's out there and date around) But then he said that he thinks I am afraid of falling in love with him? I am totally confused. Does that mean he is starting to care?

maybe hes the kind of guy that cant hold a steady relationship. beets me but thats the first thing I could think of after reading your post.
