I know you've put this in the science section, but your question really reminds me of what's known as Astral Travel - a mind exercise that allows you to 'transcend' away from your physical self, for want of a better term

Incidentally, I reckon you might enjoy Olaf Stapledon's 'Starmaker' - that's a book about a man who's mind leaves his body and wanders off to explore the dephs of space...

What is it when you can imagine yourself leaving the universe and going to space in such a natural way. Its so weird you know. I often think naturally about leaving the earth and going to space on my own then returning.
