Rock and Roll music started as a simplification of Rhythm & Blues. Rock and Roll appealed more to kids because it seemed less ethnic (read black) and easier to dance to than Rhythm & Blues. Much of the early opposition to Rock and Roll was because white parents lumped it in with Rhythm & Blues and considered it black music.

Rock and Roll was also influenced by Gospel as well as Country and Western. Later Rock and Roll became simply Rock and we had the British invasion (Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc) then came Punk Rock, Glam Rock, and Metal.
