honestly, besides shaving, I don't know. I dont have a lot of exp with this, as I am a chick...but I would call a waxing parlor. they can tell you if they offer that type of waxing service to men...it is painful, and it may not offer much consolation that over time it no longer hurts, but you wont have the same itchy sensation with the regrowth as with shaving...BUT, you would have to be comfortable allowing one of the staff to actually see you in the buff and be down there...if you know what I mean! hey, lots of chicks get bikini waxes all the time, so if we can do it...so can a guy, right! I don't know...you decide!

really you can use pretty much all of the same methods women use
theres shaving
waxing
the laser treatment
and even creams, like nair
theres no reason why it wont work for your hair as well

Pretty much the same way we do is just shave it.. but I would definitely use a Mach 3 so that way it doesn't cut you.

I agree with you that shaving is itchy... this is because spiky hair ends are caught underneath the pores and rub against clothing and other hair/skin flesh.

Waxing from a salon/parlour is an option however embarrassing it may be for you. Just bear in mind that these beauticians are experienced and don't judge their clients. Waxing is painful... depending on your pain threshold. It will feel like a burning sensation, bit like a tattoo just less so. It is always done at your own pace and they will stop when you ask them to. It can be pricey though.

Hair removal cream is again another option but it is messy and not as good as waxing. Hair grows back almost as soon as shaved hair does, so pretty soon! It does work, and doesn't itch like shaving does. However you must read the instructions on the packet.

Or if you wanted to have a free way of doing it but spending more time, use tweezers in your room for an hour or so. Cut long hair down and then pluck them. Start in one place then work your way across. Yes it is going to feel hairy even if there are none there. These are the lighter hair that you don't need to bother with yet. Once you are satisfied with your pubic region, I suggest you use a hair removal cream for half the time stated to get rid of excess hair left. This will take a while though, perhaps a week if you did an hour or so a night.
