Religion men/women not equal

.co Asked by 0001 4 months ago, 15 answers.

Is there any religion on earth which consider men and women to be equal?

Many religions claim men are superior to women. Is there any religion which states women are greater than men. At least that they are equal. Why do you think many religions...

consider men to be superior? Is it because all the founders of the religions happen to be men?

Buddhists view both genders as equal - a woman can receive the ordainment of a monk, just like a man.

I think it is less of who founded the religion and more of the time in which most of them were founded... Most of the large religions were founded in patriarchal societies... And the rules and regulations have thus continued...

Even in Buddhism, there are some countries and places that do not allow full ordainment, and it took a while before it even came about...

You have to remember, this is really less of a religious thing, more of how the world views women thing... Religions are very much influenced by modern cultures...

According to Judaism women are considered equal with man. Why else would G-d set a woman above all men when Isreal was fighting Hazor. Or why would G-d use a woman to kill Hazor's best warrior? However under normal circumstance it is encouraged that the woman stay at home because they are better at raising children. But no, this is simply nothing more then attack on religion. You scream for more rights when you already have more rights then a man. When will you stop and accept that there are differences between man and women? There are somethings that we can do and you cant, and somethings that you can do but we cant.

Many Archeologists theorize that matriarchal religions predated patriarchal ones. Most believers today belong to Abrahamic religions which at their roots are patriarchal. Perhaps earlier religions viewed women to be superior since they could bleed once a month without dying and bear children (both probably seemed miraculous to men of the era).

I have read that the Pythagorean cult considered women to be more spiritual than men but I don't know if it held them to be otherwise superior. I've also read that in the Taoist tradition women were considered better with money than men and in their wedding ceremonies one of the promises men made was to let their wives handle the finances.

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and the Baha'I faith are two religions that I'm aware of that recognize the equality of women. In fact many people active in the women's suffrage movement in the US were Quakers. Every Unitarian I met felt the genders were equal but I don't know if it is part of their official teachings.

Judaism? Are you kidding?

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. (Genesis 3:16)

When a woman has a discharge of blood, which is her regular discharge from her body, she shall be in her impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening - Leviticus 15:19

When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets: then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her. (Deuteronomy 25:11-12)

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean. (Leviticus 12:2)

But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days. (Leviticus 12:5)

Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing. But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. (Judges 19:24-25)

What rights do women have that apparently make them more than a mans rights? Women dont earn as much in equivalent jobs... They are more likely to be in poverty... Exactly what sort of equality do you think that is?

Judaism, PLEASE. I am jewish and the jewish religion does not place women and men on the same plane. It has only been within the last thirty years that women could publically read from the Torah, or serve as a Rabbi or Cantor.

Now for this tidbit...

Perhaps in your case they are...

Gender equality is not about who is stronger, more intelligent, etc. Those are individual considerations. Some women are stronger than men, some men are brighter than women and vice versa...
Gender equality is about mutual respect in the family, in the work place, in society.
It is about a woman being valued the same as a man. Paid equally for the same job, given the same opportunity for advancement.
It is not about sitting quietly while the man makes decisions, turning a deaf ear to inappropriate sexual advances for fear of being fired.
It is not about placing the man as the head of the household, sitting in a separate section of your place of worship, being denied the chance to serve as pastor, rabbi, etc.
It is not about a man deciding what is best for a woman.

It is NOT about who is stronger, faster, or has bigger muscles.

let's look back on the garden of eden and the time of the creation. God created things in an order plants, then animals, then man. Each thing more beautiful, intricate, and powerful then the last. Almost as if each time God was saying I can do better.
God Created man and after looking at him God new He could do better, so He created woman.

Well, actually, on the topic of Judaism, although it is not obvious from studying traditional text, most religious authorities DO view both genders as equal, but different. ie, although women can not fulfill some commandments, it's because they don't need that specific action to rectify their soul.

In Biblical religions women have to bide by the whims of men. That's not equal. In the bible it's a sin for MEN to be gay, why? Scholars believe it's because one of the men have to lower themselves to the women standards.
The country is ruled my people of biblical faith, has been since it was created. Women get lower pays for the same job men get higher pay for. Only in the recent decades have society sought to correct that.
That' not equal.

Yes, there is.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is *no male and female*, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

though the bible says it, look at history,
men were obviously dominie in that religion
Oh, hint hint,
The beginnings of those religions(the biblical religions) were started out as a rebellion against the pantheist female deities.

It's quite simple actually. Religions were founded by people. (my belief if you disagree don't take it as an insult) They were created a long time ago, in societies which reject idea of equality. The man was superior, and men ruled the world. Therefore it was up to them whether a religion is going to a accepted or not. So everything was going to their advantage as a bribe. Just the fact that most religions were adopted to societies they were created in, convinces me even more, that they were created by people. Patriarchate rejected woman as a sacred mother (former belief) and put her in a inferior position to a man. Like a possession to be protected and used. So did the religions of the time in question.
