Re-adding someone on msn

I deleted some one off of msn a few weeks ago, I really miss talking to him though does any one know how I can add them back, I have them as an 'non-instant-message contact' but I want to be able instant message him, not email... please help me!!

go to contacts, add contact and just type in his msn address again

I tried that, but as soon as I sign out.. it turns back into a 'non-instant-message contact'.
