How did Rascal Flatts get their name?

They were first going to call themselves “Dueces Wild,” until they found out a dozen other bands used that name. Then, Joe Don Rooney told me, “This piano player buddy of ours came in and he said, ‘ Gary I got a good name for you.’ We said, ‘You might as well tell us because everybody else is telling us man.’ “He said, ‘Rascal Flatts.’ “He said, ‘That was the name of my band in high school and I think it's a cool name.’ We talked about it. That's kind of cool. Gary couldn't stand the rascal part of it. He goes, ‘everybody is going to be calling us Spanky and Alfalfa and Buckwheat.’” Gary said, “I had to chew on that one for a while.”
