Quit smoking?

Traintracks pic Asked by andrew_89 11 months ago, 8 answers.

Have you ever tried to quit smoking?

Have you succeeded?

If so how did you do it? And what helped you quit?
Do you have any tips?

Thanks a lot

How to quit smoking?

You can't quit smoking. You CAN become a non-smoker.

There is a big difference in the way your mind and body reacts to the two attempts. In quitting smoking your mind and body tell each other that you are trying to deprive it of something it likes and needs, therefore it works hard at preventing you from succeeding.

In becoming a non-smoker you successfully attain your goal while not giving your mind and body a chance to perceive that they are being deprived.

Along with the above attitude change, you can help achieve your goal by having on hand some hard candy. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke simply place a piece of candy in your mouth.

Don't try to refrain from smoking forever. Simply refrain for the next couple of hours.

I, personally, know that the above works. I smoked for 30 years and was up to two packs a day. I successfully became a non-smoker 22 years ago. It wasn't always easy and I still have nightmares that I've started smoking again and blown my smoke-free record but then I wake up and am thankful it was only a dream.

The candy I used was Gobstopper Jaw Breakers. The lasted about 10 minutes each and effectively replaced the craving for a cigarette.

You, too, can become a non-smoker, even if you're surrounded by people who smoke. It is your choice. When offered a cigarette you don't say no thanks, I'm trying to quit but instead state no thanks, I don't smoke.

Good Luck!

I hope you do not take offense,
To that that's gone before;
'Tis only that it's my two-cents,
And not one penny more. ยง;o)

I quit smoking ciggarettes 3 years ago. In order to quit, I just put my mind to it, chewed lots of gum, hard candy, toothpicks, etc. It's not that hard if you put your mind to it and you really want to quit. The hardest part about quiting is learning to do things in your life that you usually have a smoke during - without one.

Niccotine patches and pills.
just think of the tar going into your lungs.
If you have a girlfriend or kids,
Your mum, dad, sister, whoever...
Imagine telling them you have cancer.

I just quit cold turkey.. if you can make it three days without them, the cravings become much easier to handle and you dont want them as much. I just kept thinking of the benefits of not smoking and it kept me motivated.

My why I quit helped me more that my how I quit. My dad almost died from smoking. He started when he was 14, quit when he was 38 and ended up in hospital with all the veins in his lungs damaged for about 2 months (intensive care). because of that he had to have 7 operations on his knees and legs alone to repair the damage that the medication did to him (the cortizone caused some of his bones - sorry for my english on this one. to become brittle and crack).

He is still not fully recovered, will never be and also he lost about half a million rand (was a lot at that time, stil is) and has ever since been struggling financially - we struggle because he can't find a job easily because he used to be in and out of hospital so often. That sucks.

Also my granfather's brother died in our car (I was there) on our way from my grandmother funeral from Emphysema (caused by excessive smoking).

After that I once saw an old lady in the hospital busy dying because of lung disease.

For those reasons I quit smoking. I don't want to end up like that.
