America was named after Richard Ameryk, a wealthy merchant from Bristol. Places aren't usually named after people first names.

America was named for Amerigo Vespucci.
He wasn't an astronomer, though, he was an explorer and a cartographer, or map-maker.

Hmm I didnt know there was a disupte over where the name came from, but apparently people arent sure if it was Richard Ameryk or Amerigo Vespucci...

I had never heard of Richard Ameryk, or Amerike. I looked it up and there is a theory that america was named after him rather than vespucci.
