To what end? You would have to speak to whatever department head, but a BA does usually prove that you have the ability to tie your shoes properly and therefore pursue the MA in English. However, I would look for a more specialized field for your own sake than the general field of 'English', unless you are trying to groom yourself to be a professor in English at a University.

There are higher paying goals that could be attained from the same cost of your education. Even specializing in 'education' makes you more desirable by employers which is a branch of English. I would suggest checking to see what opportunities are available at the universities you are looking at before declaring or applying.

Yes, most master's programs don't require a BA in the same subject. An MA in English is possible with any number of undergrad degrees, including a BA in History.

The preceding two posts are right on target. I've noticed in my search for a graduate program in human services or sociology that a solid liberal arts training in your BA program helps things a great deal. Funguy makes a really good point about your particular choice of study--an 'English' major is pretty limited career wise, if you're looking to teach English at the college or university level and you want tenure, most institutions require at least a Ph.D.. So basically, Education, journalism, communications, and others are similar to the English major, but they have broader career opportunities--which is a plus for the cost of graduate school. Best wishes to you. :-) -S
