You can't mod it. Simply put. The reason is that the playstation 2 had all its disks formatted and compiled on regular dvd disks and thats why the ps2 could play dvds because it had a dvd player in it to read the disks however, the ps3 has a blueray lens. Sony opted to upgrade to a blueray lens to enable gamers and game creators to do things in high definition ushering in a completely new era of gaming. That is why the ps3 can also play blue ray disks. If you got one of the original ps3s from around the launch (60gb+) than you have one that is backwards compatible. That means that inside it are both the dvd and blueray player meaning it can play both ps3, ps2 and even ps1 games whereas the new ps3s are only bluerayy

You can't mod a PS2 to play PS3 games. PS3 games run on blu-ray technology and PS2 doesn't have blu-ray capability.
