The PS3 40 gig is the only PS3 that is NOT backwards compatible.
The PS3 20 gig actually had a chip that mad this possible, but the 60 and 80 gig version only have emulation software so some games may not work correctly.
The 40 gig doesn't because Sony wasn't making the profits they figured they would so they took the chip out and it dropped the price $100. Then they created the software. I got the 40 gig. I wasn't happy. Now I have to save money for the 80 gig since that's the only one left in production that's backwards compatible.
