Read the whole proverb first. Afterward you get a general feel for what is being said. Descretion can also be described as discernment. To be able to discern good from evil for example can be easy at times but mostly not. By being able to discern it will preserve or protect your soul from attack. Understanding is another term for wisdom. So, what do we break it down to? If you are able to discern properly then it will preserve you. Wisdom will protect you. Continue to read on to the end of the proverb a couple of times and you'll start to see the meaning in the words.
