In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. Marijuana smokers can have many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency toward obstructed airways. A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers. Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. In one study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement including physical and mental health, cognitive abilities, social life, and career status. Not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time...

I think recreational drugs should be decriminalized in general, pot included. They need to be controlled, like alcohol, but not prohibited. If drugs were legal, they could be grown/produced legally in the US, which would put and end to drug lords and cut off financing for terrorists. It would also reduce the need for prisons by about 1/2, and drastically cut the need for law enforcement budgets.

Gang violence, driven almost entirely by the drug trade, would evaporate almost overnight.

...and the people who are doing drugs illegally now, could do them legally.

There's no downside.

It's kinda dull, compared to other things...Smokin' it everyday has to cause harm, tho...just like ingesting cigs or booze on a daily basis...

*** a lot of people I know actually drive better when they are high***

LOL...you must be stoned when you're riding with them...no matter how hard somebody concentrates when they drive, it doesn't do sh** for their reaction time...and reaction time is what will save your life...Pot slows it WAY down...

Actually phrannie, studies have shown that 1 or 2 drinks a day is actually good for you. It releives stress, which can cause its own host of health issues. 4 or 5 dirinks a day however is not healthy. As with most things, moderation is best..

Yeah, I thought that was a pretty stupid line too. It may seem like it at the time, but no one drives better stoned. But I think it is much easier to drive stoned, than it is to drive drunk. However, neither is good.

legion, care to show us this research?

No one is saying that there aren't some health risks, but they are far less that of tobacco and alcohol. Should government ban something simply because some people might abuse it? If so, then start with alcohol and tabacco, then ban high fat foods, than ban all forms of gambling, then ban shopping, then ban sex.

Government should not be trying to regulate behavior, unless that behavior is endangering others.
