Popcorn seeds are they actually corn?

Ok I've kinda always wanted to know if popcorn seeds are actually corn?, this may not be a verry intelligent question but I was just wondering!

Popcorn is a type of flint corn. It's kernels have a very hard outer shell with a hard starchy inside.

Some wild types will pop, but the cultivated strain is Zea mays averta, which is a special kind of flint corn.
