I wouldn't use Catherine the Great as an example of a good female leader. She had a lot of lovers who she put in positions of power because, well, they were her lovers. She was also blind to the many scandals and corruption they were involved in, and completely out of touch with the needs of her people.
But a lot of studies and surveys have been done on this, and it's interesting to see the results. When it comes to working out compromises, being honest with the public, and handling policies on social issues, women seem to outperform men in some surveys. When it comes to being decisive, handling crime, and ensuring national security, the men perform better in survey results. Here's one such survey:
