Please dont hate muslims

VILLA! Asked by leevan 2 months ago, 23 answers.

disclaimer: im christian, not muslim

disclaimer no.2: pls do not link this to rumours about obama etc.

now, I fully understand why some people hate muslims. it seems that just about every terrorist out there is a muslim.

however, we have to remind ourselves that terrorists make up a very small portion of the entire world population, while muslims make up a fifth of the world population. it can thus be said that NOT ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS so stop despising them

This is only the latest chapter in a very long history of bad relations between the two religions. You're looking at about 1400 years of death, destruction, and persecution, brought on by devout followers of both sides. With the exception of the Ottoman Empire and the Convivencia in Spain, I can't think of many places where Christians and Muslims haved lived in peace.

In the movie "Charlie Wilson's War" the CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos says to Charlie Wilson, "America doesn't fight religious wars. That's why I like living there." However, many Christian Americans feel this war on terrorism is a spiritual war between good and evil, while many in the Muslim world see the war on terrorism as the latest Crusade, this time by America. So there is the perception that this is a religious war. And that, of course, means that when people describe their "enemy", they will describe them using religious terms. And that will fuel the hatred between both sides.

Terrorists are extremists, and they don't represent the true values of Islam.

Timothy McVeigh was a Christian Republican NRA member and perpetrated the 2nd deadliest terrorist attack in US history.

There are nutjobs in every religion and worldview.

One thing I do notice is that nobody mentions that McVeigh, pro-life extremists who assassinate doctors and burn down buildings and white supremisists groups are staunchly Christian. We only attach the religion of perpetrators when we are trying to fan the flames of xenophobia in intolerance.

Fastes growing religion.. Why???..they need all the recruits they can get for the suicide bombers.. after all.. he can only be used once.. Muslim Origin are where the terrorists come from.. So if the core is bad.. does that mean the rest of the apple is??? Something to think about

qball, you're an idiot. No offense, but seriously. Did you even READ the answers posted before you? Timothy McVey, etc?

Or how about the Unibomber? He was Christian, afaik...and, pardon my "stereotype" however, it's a fact: religion grows fastest among the lowest economic class of a given population. Eg, it's their way of escaping & dealing with the harsh reality of their lives.

Now, if you cross that line of thought with the areas of the world with the most rampant poverty, you'd see a strong correlation, eg, Islam taking root the fastest among countries where there are a lot of poor people.

Next, the whole "terrorist" issue - if a Christian group started supporting families of suicide bombers (as extremist muslim groups do) then you can bet lunch the same would happen.

Last...if you want to do some, you know, analysis of history, the Crusades were *started* by the Christians...and that was an act of "terrorism" in the name of "God"...so was the slaughter of the Native Americans, again, an act of "terrorism" in the name of "God"...so, historically, the Muslim extremists have been at this a lot less than the Christian / Catholic crusaders & conquerers were...eg, for about 500 years or so.

You'll note that, even with Timothy McVey, there was a common theme: he was poor. You don't find "rich" terrorists out pulling the trigger OR sacrficing themselves, from any religion...it's always the poor.

Excellent points RG...

Hatred is a blinding emotion. Those consumed by hatred of muslims are completely oblivious to any other types of terrorists, or terroism that happens in this world.

I don't hate Muslims at all, but I'm no fan of Islam, and see no reason to pretend their belief system is rational or reasonable in any way. (the same goes for all religions AFAIC)

Toadaly, I don't think that their belief is anymore or less irrational as any other religion. But labeling an entire religion as dangerous because of the behavior of a tiny fraction of them, is just wrong. As was already said, McVeigh was christian. Does that reflect on all christians?

What frustrates me is that while I'm free to criticise Christianity without (many) people trying to tell me I can't, it seems that frequently, any attempt to criticise Islam is met with accusations of being an islamophobe, or of "hating muslims", and so forth.

It's not fear or anger to hold a religion responsible for the acts it engenders. Even the 'moderates' bear some responsibility for lending legtimacy to the extremists. And it's not just Islam: Islam may have terrorists, but powerful Christians start and support wars, instead.

No, obviously. However, if McVeigh's actions were motivated primarily by his religious beliefs, I think it would say quite a bit about his religion, although nothing in general about those who participate in it.

Like I said, I don't hate Muslims, but I'm no fan of Islam, and won't be bullied into pretending to respect it, or any other institutionalized mind control system (aka religion).

it's fine that you don't respect a certain religion (it's your right not to)...but I would hope you would respect the person practicing it as a fellow human just trying to do the right thing.
