How can I get him back?

I love this boy a lot I've known him for years and we dated off and on for a while and I feel in love because to me he was my first everything. well he asked me out every fourth of july but I wasn't intrested so finally in 2007 he asked me and I said yes I found out before he asked me he asked another girl.

I broke up with him and found out I need him in my life him and that girl dated for a year they finally broke up me and her became friends and were really close.
how can I get him back? should I even try?
