Asparagus is a perennial so starting it from seed is a slow way to go, but once the plant is established, it can keep prodcing for 20 years. I know that you have to wait for at least 3 months before the seedlings can go into the vegetable garden, but can't help you any further without consulting a gardening site.

I think that it takes a year or two for harvesting if you start from seed.
