Each month your body preps the lining of your uterus to receive a fertilized egg. When an egg fails to implant, the uterus sloughs this lining and the supporting blood vessels causing the bleeding.

There is some debate as to how necessary the monthlies are.
Certainly at least some can be skipped using the hormones in BC pills. For instance a lot of women skip their periods during the summer months by continually taking the hormonal pills and tossing the 7 sugar pills.

Hope this helped. If you are thinking of skipping, talk to your health practitioner for advice and reassurance.

Good Luck!!

You don't necessarily have to have your period but to stop it you would need to have a continuous supply of hormones...like the kind from birth control pills. If you don't want a period every month then talk to your doctor, there are birth control pills that make you have a period only 4 times a year.

I haven't had a period in almost 4 years because I had a procedure done that zapped away the lining in my uterus. I used to have very heavy periods after I got my tubes tied so my doctor did something called a Nova Sure. This isn't something that everyone should get though because once you have it done you can't have babies. Anyway my doctor said that I don't need to have a period and that it won't hurt me not to have it.
