People who don't use grammar on funadvice?

What do you think of people who don't use capitals at the beginning of sentences and spell words incorrectly on this site, and things like that? I mean, I usualy writ e like this adn dont pay attention to how its coming out of the keyboeard... but lately I've been wondering if that makes people who DO write properly think I'm slack or lazy, or if it gives other people ideas or prejudices (as in pre-judgements) and decisions about what I am like because of the way I write.

What do you think?

There have been several posts about this lately, but unfortunly it doesn't stop people from using leekspeak or whatever. I personally cant stand leekspeak, I could read it if I tried but I don't even bother. Just seems like a waste of time. I also hate when people go a whole paragraph without using periods, captials, ect. Sometimes people have typos, but its pretty obvious when someone isn't using proper grammer. We all get typos here, but its usually only a word here and there. Some people think its fun to type in all capitals I guess, I don't see the point. Sometimes I will put a word in capitals, just a single word though. I try my best to use good grammer, and I wish more people would use proper grammer. I don't understand why people don't , that cant be good.

...that's why I have a spell check in my browser

I don't have a problem with the occasional misspell or bad grammar... but if it's not readable or I have to re-read it to understand it I most likely won't answer the question.

If it's not being done on purpose, it is a direct reflection of the quality of education one has received - I see many beautiful web pages made on the net with words misspelled or used in the wrong context and the person who made it doesn't even realize it - it's a shame considering all the work put into it...hopefully our education system will improve in the future...but you're right, it doesn't reflect positively.

I guess I never understood why the Internet was seen as a place to just abandon everything you learned in school about proper language.

I pretty much agree with everyone else, the occasional error is no problem. I do it myself. But I think it's lazy to just do it deliberately.

Neither did I, but I have had an epiphany in the last couple of minutes- its because there's no spell check! We are all so used to word's spell check that we just ignore stuff that doesn't have a little red line underneath.

Plus I figured out a new phenomenon: type as you talk- you type going forward, not looking back- like you cant edit what you've said to someone, so you dont bother trying, apply that same principle to typing.

and THEN I figured out why I dont put the apostrophe in- when I handwrite, I write the word, THEN place the apostrophe. Word corrects it automatically, so I never learn.

and now, I have a confession to make: I DID type badly on purpose when I posted this question. it was in the 'I usually write like this' part- I wasnt sure if there were enough errors in there to make my point!

at least I dont mess with punctuation. except for the commas instead of semicolons- im afraid that people will think im stuck up if I use a semicolon!

I tend be on the lazy side in that often I don't bother with caps... and I might see a typo above and not really bother to fix it if it's obvious. The things that bother me are when something is hard to read because it has no punctuation, just one huge paragraph... or when it's internet slang shorthand like sup what yo doin 4 me 2 cu l8r... When I read it in my head I sound like a moron.

oh yeah I hate that in one long chunk. in small doses I can live with it, but otherwise just shoot me in the head. and people who write really long chunks of text without pressing enter twice in between paragraphs annoy me too.

The ONLY thing I have to judge you all on is what is written on this site, obviously. Much of that is in the content of your entries, but some is in its appearance.

I don't mind if there are misspellings as long I don't have to struggle to get the central idea of the question.

If the appearance is TOO far from the norm, I ignore it completely.

Imagine if someone were screaming as loud as they could in a room. You would leave. That is what I do when someone writes with cap lock on. Never using any caps is so much easier to read, as long as some punctuation is being used.

If someone rambles on in a foreign language (Leetspeak) or mispronounces every other word (REALLY bad spelling), they also get little attention.

Leetspeak - it's a way of writing things using numerals and somesuch in the place of letters. For example, in Leetspeak, the word Leet becomes L33t. Single words in online chat conversation I can handle, but an entire paragraph of it and I just don't bother to read it because it will take like 5 minutes to decipher.

Usually for the most part, one's grammar skills reflect their education. Other times they are being lazy. Laziness is not an excuse in my opinion though, especially when what you are reading (such as this post) will be around for a while for people to read. In MSN chat or whatever, I do let my grammar skills slip a bit because I'm usually trying to get out what I want to say in a certain amount of time.

The English language can be a funny thing. I personally have no issue with the use of a semicolon - when used in its proper grammatical context of course. The I versus l thing is simply a function of sans-serif Helvetica-style fonts, you don't have the same problem with Times New Roman for instance. It is annoying on street signs however, there is a suburb in my city called ILAM. On the street signs, it looks like Ilam - and when I first arrived, I thought it was saying 11am.

At the end of the day, one's grammar skills are how we perceive intelligence. An answer to a question with good grammar is more likely to be taken note of than one without. And more people are likely to answer a question with decent grammar than a question without. It may be somewhat biased and unfair, but that's the way it goes.

If you think about it, all of us want to make a good 'first impression' and should certainly take pride in whatever we do, 'doing it right' - this moment in time may be (probably will be) the only time you and I come in contact in our lives - what you say and how you say it will leave an impression - shouldn't we strive always to be at our best in every area instead of 'dumbing down' ?

leetspeak actually sounds pretty cool. not that I would ever use it. but I can see how you would get sick of it VERY quickly.

I find it rather annoying when people type LiKe DiZ and then expect to be taken seriously. I can't take a person's question seriously if they're type like they don't even know how to read. However, there are people like that on every site that you go to. I've kind of gotten used to it, but I'd definitely not be opposed to them taking a few English courses.

Grammar is what I try to keep a close eye on. But I don't let it bug me unless people write like this on purpose.
LiKe ThIs. Sometimes incorrect spelling is a sign of true laziness and some people just flat out don't know how to spell correctly. I don't let it bother me. It must be your pet peeve.
