Why is it than when your little your parents keep telling you to speak, but when your older all they want you to do is shut up?

because 'talking' normal part of healthy development..and is a sign you are doing what you should be.

I only ever tell my kids to shut up when I don't like what's coming out of their mouth! and that's normally only after I have asked them a gazillion times to 'stop it' 'be quiet' 'is that necassary' or my fave...'for the love of god, pack it in!'
