The Democratic party had a similar problem with Howard Dean. Dean was popular with the base and was great at raising money but was probably unelectable. They made him chairman of the Democratic party where he has done a great job.
If the Republican party was smart they'd follow the Democratic lead and retire Michael Steale and make Palin chair of the party.
