Opinions on unique names.

The Fiance and Me at a Luau Asked by mandyloo 10 months ago, 9 answers.

So it seems like unique baby names with weird trendy spellings are cool now. Replace every vowel with a Y? Sweet! Make up a name completely? Even better!

I think sometimes that people dont think about the effect a weird name will have on a child...

for the rest of their life. Its notonly about having trouble spelling it, or being made fun or, or no one ever pronouncing it right.

The larger issue is those kids future careers. Recent studies have shown that names have a huge impact on the hiring process (check out the book Freakonomics). If an employer has 5 resumes and can call in 4 for an interview, they are much more likely to call in the Sarah, Matthew , Christopher and James than the Unyque Madisyn.

I just don't understand why mother's think this is a good idea. What are your opinions on this?

well, my name is spelled L-Y-N-D-S-E-Y, not the traditional L-I-N-D-S-E-Y or L-I-N-D-S-A-Y, so, I don't really see a problem with it if it's a cool name, like Vernisha, or Triystan, I mean, I'm going to name my first-born son Danger Alencio and my first born daughter Sapphire Chole, and, my whole family's got weird names, (Genevieve, Jasper, Brixton, etc.)

I prefer names that are considered different so they are not adverage names like ben or laura etc but some people I feel go to the extremes of this and call their children ridiculous names, for example I think jordan called her child princess tiami or something... in these cases I would have to agree, the parents obviously hadnt thought about the effect it would have on a childs life so I feel that they are being quite selfish by giving them bizzar names :P

I love unique names and will definatly be calling my children unusual names. But I think there is a line you can pass, I wont make up a name, I'll just find one that not evryone has. Theres a differnce between unique and blame stupid ( peaches, tiger lilly, cherry blossom- all bob geldofs children!!)

I feel that you can still name your children something unique without just being plain weird.
