What gift can I make for my son's 9th birthday?

Ok I lost my job not to long ago. An I was the sole income for my family. Now I am broke and have no money extra this month to get my son a gift. I'm making him a cake which is not bad because he know I like to make his cake every year. But I know he is expecting a gift. An I feel horrible that I can't afford to get him anything. HELP..... Any ideas for a homemade gift?

do you know how to carve and have a knife? cause you could carve something for him
you could also try building him something out of raw, unsused, and unwanted wood (some places don't use some wood, and throw it out to sell for cheap.)

just some ideas. as long as it's from the heart, it shouldn't matter
