Back in the bbs days I belonged to some bbses that required you to use your real name and I belonged to some that allowed you to use a pseudonym. There are advantages to real names and there are advantages to pseudonyms.

Certainly things tended to be more civil when posters knew that they could personally be held accountable for what they said.. Things weren't that bad on the bbses that alloed pseudonyms though there was usually a few troublemakers that the rest of us learned to ignore.

I participate on several forums. I use my real name on some. It certainly gives your posts more weight when you are willing to put your John Hancock on it. Other places like here I use pseudonyms. The anonymity allows allows me to discuss some personal things more candidly than I would if everyone knew who I was.

In the 20 years I've been on the internet I've never had a net stalker but that is something to think about. The more personal info you put on the net the more material net stalkers have to work with. I'd certainly caution young people to avoid putting any personal information out there.

I don't care about telling people my first name, but not my last name. Not really for security purposes but the fact that people I know might use the same sites I do. There is a good chance they do and if someone I knew used this site, that would be bad. And that goes for some other sites I go to. Some are ok, like facebook.

If you look at peoples profile you will notice several start with Hi my name is or I'm if you look at my profile you will notice the first thing I do is tell you My Name just like several other Advisors some people use their names like Ashley868 And some don't. I'll tell you my name up front in my profile cause it creates a feeling of ease when you know someones name instead of saying Hey You!
So incase you don't want to look in my profile my name is Rodney.

Most people just don't do it because of predetors that may be on and if they know your whole name they can get alot of info on you. For example, I've searched my name online a few times and I've found that anyone could find out what county I live and the school becuase I've been in the newspapers so many times. Also, like some of the others have said its easier to go by either a fake name or just your first name because then people don't know won't be able to say so and so said this and use it against you and some questions you may ask you may not want a friend to know that you wrote it.

I guess that most of us just know that there are a lot of perverts and stuff out there, who come to sites where there are a lot of teenagers. So NEVER show your real name, I don't even give my real e-mail address. No one would e- mail me anyway. They can't see my e mail when they read my profile. So, no harm done.

Just me... Answered by kyu on Sep 09, 2007, 10:39PM

My dear, of course many tell their real names. My real name is Kyoumars, but all call me just Kyu. What about you? Why don't you write your real name?
But answering your question, I would say, perhaps they are undercover agent, hehehehehhe.

some people do it for safety reasons, some people just dont like their name. I hate my name, Its 'shauni' how stupid is that? well anyway i would change mine but it would be too much hassle. pretty much anyone you ask will say that they dont like their name. but hey - you get over it!
peace out!

Well, mine is in the press release, etc...but, I don't put it in my posts or use it for my username here, largely because I do consulting and some clients search the internet for my name, see what comes up, etc.

As FunAdvice is seperate from my day job, I'd rather they not get confused when they Google me wink
