How do I no if my 8th period instrimental teacher mr.smiley is gay??

look at his hands,, look at the nails.
is he very clean shaven?
look at the way he walks
listen to his laugh
analyse him !!

First of all, does it really matter?

The easiest way would be to simply ask him.

Just because he's clean shaven and has manicured nails does not indicate a sexual preference. It could mean he cares about his appearance. As for checking out the male or female students, as a teacher he is required to keep his eyes and ears open to what is going on around him. Since teachers are the first line of defense for keeping students safe in school, you can't be sure of what he's looking at.

If it really matters to you, ask him.
