My gerbil is sick!

I think my gerbil might be sick does anyone know anything about them? I just got him from a friend yeaterday and he wasnt sick then. One of his eyes is kinda squinty and the other is closed. I cant afford to bring him to a vet so dont suggest that but any other advice is appreciated.

well you need to find a way to get some money, because the best option is to take him to the vet

take a can and put a picture of it on the can and go around school asking people for donations to take your pet to the vet...

it sounds like your gerbil has an eye infection, get some cotton wool and soak it in some warm water and wipe it on his/her eye that is closed gently!!! I would advise to take it to the vet because this can cause them to go blind as for any animal with an eye infeiction if its not treated!!

Epson salts, also...mixed with distilled water...for a gerbil, I'd say a teaspoon of salts to a pint of warmed water...then as sophie lea07 says, soak a cotton ball, and gently hold it on his eye...dip again, and gentley put on his eye again...it's very soothing, and you'll probably notice that if at first he fights it, he will soon lean into the cotton ball.
