You should send him some books to read & more letters. The more support & communication he gets from you, the easier it will be for him while he's there. Also, if you send him some educational books, then he can at least gain knowledge while he's there so that when he gets out, he can hopefully be better off in his new life.
Best,

My ex was in jail. It wasn't easy, by any stretch of the imagination, and the significant others of inmates get a lot of negativity thrown at them which is the last thing that helps the situation.
Anyway, I sent him a lot of letters, I made sure his comissary account (to buy snacks, paper, etc.) had enough in it to get him by. I sent him pictures (make sure you follow the guidelines) and bought him books and magazines that he asked for. (It all depends on what the jail allows-my ex was in county lockup and not an actual prison, so they were a little more liberal). The best you can do for an inmate that you care about is to let them know that you're there and thinking of them. My ex used to say he didn't care what I said in my letters, even if I was just talking about work or the grocery store or any other mundane everyday life thing, he just wanted to know there was a world outside and that I cared enough to let him in on what my life contained.
Best of luck!
