Whats a music format smaller then a mp3 that will play on a mp3 player?

Mp3 is as small as you can get without completely ruining the sound quality. Like..the next step down would be MIDI and thats just utter crap.
Do you just want to be able to store more tunes on your player? If thats it then you can adjust the size of the MP3's you create when you rip a cd.

wma I think... they should play on all MP3 players (most anyway)

It is hard to do much better than mp3. You can of course reduce the bitrate for mp3s to get smaller files but you also reduce the fidelity as well.

Of the widely available formats wma can compres a bit better than mp3. Just make sure your player supports this format.

I recently heard that there is a music files that will come out sometime in the future thats1000 times smaller than a mp3. But until that comes out Ill have to stick with wma.
