The tallest mountain in the WORLD is Mount Everest, and it's in Nepal/Tibet, not America.

The tallest AMERICAN mountain is Mount McKinley.

5mm is a minute amount... However, Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano on the island of Hawaii is taller, but it's not really a mountain.

Mount Everest, at 29,035 feet (8850 meters) is indeed the highest in the world. The next highest is K2 in northern Pakistan at 28,251 feet (8611 meters). The highest summit not in the Himalayan range (mainly Nepal, Tibet, India, and Pakistan) is Aconcagua in Argentina at 22,841 feet (6962 meters). There is a lot of talk about Mauna Kea (13,796 feet) being higher than Everest, which is true if you measure from the bottom of the sea floor (see http://www.peakware.com/peaks.html?pk=171). Similarly, Chimborazo in Ecuador (20,561 feet) has the summit farthest from the earth's center due to it's height and proximity to the Equator. However, from a climbing perspective, neither of these facts matters much for the difficulty of Everest (and other 8000 meter peaks) lies not so much in the distance from base to summit but rather the summit altitude and corresponding lack of atmospheric pressure (and thus available oxygen) at these altitudes.

Hope this helps!
