While they havent completely figured out how the whole brain and memory thing works, there is one theory that states there's two types of long term memory
Declarative which is explicit: these are consciously brought forth, divided into semantic memory, facts without context, (you dont necessarily remember how you know it) and episodic memory, which includes context (like remembering a story).
Procedural which are implicit: things you just do automatically after you've done them enough times, like you just know how to drive home without thinking about the route...
So even if you lose parts of one memory, you've still got others... memory is stored in different areas of the brain...
also your other senses are linked to your memory...
things like smell, taste, sight, hearing, touch
those things are linked to your memory and will help you remember certain things associated with that sense
