Yes. Meditation is basically concentration. Not nessecary mystic. Meditation takes practice too. Falling asleep or loosing interest and wondering off are general no no's during meditation. Start off small. In a quite room with little distraction visually and audibly, find a spot on the wall and stare at it. Think of nothing but the spot. Push all other things out of your mind and don't let anything back in. Do this for longer and longer times. This will help you get use to being in that state of mind.

Genuine meditation does yes. But there are quite a few things out there calling themselves meditation that aren't.
