Math homework...help...=/

The perimeter of a rectangular playing field is not to exceed 280ft. The width is to be 20ft less than the length. What widths will meet these conditions?

OK...So I need the steps to how you get this and the answer...=/ please help...Thank you thank...

I think -

rectangle has 2 Length and 2 Width. lets say its permiter is equal to 280 (though in the question, its like less than or equal to).. for easier computation.

2L + 2W = 280 feet

the Width is said to be 20 feet less than length so W becomes (L-20). just substitute this to the W in the equation.

2L + 2(L-20) = 280 feet
distribute the 2 to the items in parentheses so it becomes:
2L + 2L - 40 = 280
transpose 40 to the side of 280 (and this reverses the sign it has)

2L+2L = 280 + 40
4L = 320
L = 80

So if W = L - 20. W equals 60.

L = 80
L = 80
W = 60
W = 60

equals 280
