To start a magazine you need lots of capital and a good business plan detailing how you would launch it and who your market is. Magazines make money from advertisers, and advertisers pay money based on how many readers you have. There are also two types of magazine -- trade journals and consumer mags. Trade mags don't ask their subscribers to pay for the magazine because advertisers just care about their ads being seen in that particular industry.

Within any magazine, are generally these areas:

editorial - the people who write the articles
advertising - the people who sell the advertising
Marketing: the people who get the magazine to readers.

Go to journalism school if you want to become an editor, or a writer. Go to business school if you want to become a publisher or in marketing.
