A neat thing to remember is that with Macs nowadays, you can run Windows on them as well using a feature called Boot Camp (I have to do this as a part of my IT job). In fact, its possible to have Windows set up as the main OS on a Mac if you'd wish. The Mac can effectively give you the best of both worlds, and give you a chance to learn the Mac OS while still remaining useable to you.
If you're curious about the Mac, then I would say nows the opportunity to get one. A lot of college students use them, and also they are a lot more reliable than PC's in general (I say this as someone who looks after Macs and PC's for a job - the Macs never break down) which is really handy when you've got assessments due - the last thing you want is your computer to crash with all your work on it. And a big plus - there are virtually no viruses that can infect the Mac platform.
Yeah, PC is a lot more flexible but If you're looking towards a college laptop then I suggest you go with a Macbook. I'm on one right now! The Mac 'Experience' is actually pretty good, its easy to use and made very simple, you just need to have the know-how. Also, the Macs are TRES sexy. I've been using PC's all my life too and recently got a Mac. Just to let you know, I'm never going back to PC. Mac is just too delicious to miss out on.
