Upper leg and rump. (sorry, the other word I typed got censored... ) I had to stop doing them because of my knees, but recently got back into squats after a LOT of warm up in the knee department. Lack of warm ups is what causes most injuries in working out.

What you could do, is support yourself a little bit on a nearby railing or piece of furniture - just with your hand. That will take some of the stress off your knees.

Lunges use most of the leg muscles.

In patricular they are good for the quadraceps, glutes (or "rump" as pinkpearl indelicately put it), and the hamstrings.

There are variations in lunges that change the muscles emphacised.

Lunges have the reputation of being good for women who desire shapely and attractive legs so at health clubs you will often see many women doing them.

While my knees tolerate squats, leg presses, and dead lifts pretty well I've never been able to do lunges.
