Is it legal to own/buy a lockpicking kit?

Yes, it's perfectly legal to own a lockpicking kit. I researched it pretty heavily when I got mine. It's only illegal to (obviously) use it in the commission of a crime or to sell locksmithing services without a license.

I just use mine for picking locks at home because it makes for a good party trick and feels pretty cool when you get it open.

I don't think so and it could be used in court against you as it shows an intent to break into someone's house.
