Why are questions locked?

uploaded with funadvice photo booth xD Asked by jello about 1 year ago, 9 answers.

Why do they lock serious questions about suicide or self harm where people might actually need help...? But yet keep questions going on about some girl that doesnt think shes pretty... Or hannah montana's latests breast implant or w/e you sick twisted...

people talk about. Lol

Jello,

Next time search in the top right of the site, this has been asked before happy

After an advisor locks a question, he or she will Fun Mail the person with resources to professionals who can actually help (often for free). We aren't professionals, and neither are most people on the site. We don't just strand them to fend for themselves happy

I think getting a Fun Mail with positive, helpful advice is better than leaving it unlocked where the asker can get answers like go ahead and kill yourself, no one cares (which is an actual answer we've received before we began locking).

Because we're not professional therapists and can not help with serious questions involving suicide or self harm...

aye... but it would still be better to at least try right?
and the majority of professional therapists do not even help. And most of them dont care.

This is because therapy is a science in infancy...
if the basic theory of therapy actually worked, then we wouldnt need prisons, we could just send all the criminals into a therapist and they would come out as fully functioning members of society. this could not happen, however

so at the current moment in time, I dont think a therapist could do much more than just the average person.

No. The average person could inadvertadely make things worse...

Crime is a complicated issue, it is not always motivated by a mental illnes, therefore it cannot always be solved by therapy.

And you may not think a therapist does much more, but studies have shown otherwise... It is nice that we can look at scientific studies to back up certain things.

I agree a little with you jello. But take heart in the fact that most Advisors, when they lock or delete a question like that, take the time to Fun Mail the asker of the question providing them with sources of information where they might seek help.

It is too great a risk to Fun Advice to allow questions like that to continue where the advice might cause harm or furtherance of negative consequences.

What I'd really like to see is something like the information below placed as an answer on the question before it gets locked. That way other viewers would also be receiving positive informational sources rather than being left in the dark and in emotional turmoil.

If you are having problems or are depressed, below are a couple of sites that may help you:

Worldwide:

Check out the Befrienders link below. They are not only a suicide hotline but also offer help to people who are stressed or are in a state of depression.

In the U.S.A., you also have access to:

Girls and Boys Town National Hotline

Why don't the people who know they wil lonly hinder leave well alone let people who know they will be of some help tp help them?
I'm no proffesionaly but have been able to stop atleast 3 people from committing suicide just by talking to them. I remember as a kid when I went to theropy or whatever(anger managment classes phsycoligist*sp???* for ADHD they did not help me at all, actually in anger managment it only hindered me). Just becoause someone get s a degree in things like that doesn't mean they are enough of a caring person or even ready or able to deal with such matters.
Heck, it was the most randmo people in my life that have helped me quite a bit in moving foward taking a step to becoming a better person

We all have different life experiences so therefor gain different tidbits of knowledge. You never know when it might be some one with one of those different (strange) tidbits who manages to click with the individual wanting the advice.
