I think one reason is because, even the people that believe in destiny and fate still don't want to end their lives, or are afraid of death or something.Once those people consider suicide as a bad thing(a taboo) to do to themselves, some of them force it upon other people and claim it to be a bad thing, thus enforcing the idea that its a taboo?
Or some people that are close to people who are considering suicide or are suicidal don't want that person to suicide out of care and etc, and get the idea that it's horrible.
Also probably due to religion.
I guess theres probably tons more reasons too.

suicide is accepted in most other cultures, the japanese for example, back in the day it was an honorable thing to do if you were shamed somehow.
I believe that christianity has really driven the act of suicide into the realm of taboo.
my personal belief is that it is a selfish act in modern times, it creates a lot of grief from the loved ones left behind, those that are left to mourn the loss of a life, I believe it is just how modern cultures have grown to think about it.
if you truly follow through the logic of a suicide- it is basically an act of weakness, simply giving up, losing the will to fight to live- and survive through hardships.
all that is how we develope character, the struggle is what forges us into the people we are now and who we will become.
so it is usually quite sad when someone chooses the easy way out- and I guess it is that perspective that has aided suicide in becoming taboo.
I would only agree it is ok when someone has a terminal disease, and is in great pain- I do not believe in laying up in a hospital bed suffering something that will never get better- in that instance I believe in an individuals choice to end their own suffering.

taboo means something that is forbidden, strange or looked down upon by our society.. obviously suicide is looked down upon! what, do you want us to put suicide on a pedestal? and everyone who commits suicide is a hero? uh no.

**but when suicide comes up they are totallyy against it**
um, I don't think anyone in their right mind would be FOR suicide..

am I missing something here? I really don't understand this question.

The reason suicide is so taboo is for the simple reason, Life is a precious resource and not to be taken lightly. Living is probably the hardest thing you will ever have to face, killing yourself is giving in to weakness and doing natures job. Don't you realize that from the time of your conception you start to die. So you see from the very beginning you face the challenge of Life. The other reason is fear of living, and it is frowned upon by those who take the Spirit as being condemned to Hell for all eternity never to know Peace and contentment.if that is what you believe and I don't mean this in any condescending way. As for myself theirs not a day goes by when I don't think about ending the pain but I think about all those pompous asses who I would satisfy with my demise . Also, the thought of my children and family having to live with the thought that I was a coward. Living is and always will be a full time job, think it your only here for a short time just think about how long your going to be GONE.

Because if suicide was looked upon as being a normal thing to do, a lot of people going through problems in life may see death as the ideal alternative. Ending ones life is the most selfish way to try and deal with life's battles...maybe then the people who are grieving your death might decide it's all too hard and kill themselves too. It's a cowards way out of an emotional situation. If it's fate or destiny...it's usually accidental.

destiny wouldn't have been killing yourself.. fate is something that is meant to happen on it's own. you CHOOSE to commit suicide. it's nobodys destiny to kill themselves before living your life to however long, or short it was meant to be.

I heard this theory (and I dont remember all of it) whereby suicide was made taboo by the upper class to keep the lower class in its place and alive. Because if you die and you go to heaven, and life sucks (which for most of the lower class it did), why not just kill yourself, skip the misery and go straight to heaven? ofcourse the upper class couldnt have it's workers all dying out, so they created this thing of if you kill yourself you end up in hell

lol, ok, but no the reason it is taboo is because in western society life is valued... and for a person to want to die they must have something wrong with their brain (I.e. depression). I dont necessarily agree with it, but there you have it...
