Do extra Laundry additives like Clorox I and others really make any difference in a wash load?

Clorox is meant to brighten whites and there is a kind that keeps colors brighter. Brightness has never been an issue for me so I do not use it but my clothes still come out perfectly clean. However, I do use fabric softner when I can afford it, well the kind I prefer. Downey cleanbreeze makes your clothes a long with your laundry room smell sooo goood!!! Life works for me without all that color guard crap. LOL
