I just spent almost $700 on a last minute round trip ticket from NY to ATL! I don't normally buy tickets at the last minute. Was there any way I could have avoided the cost?

Only if you purchase your ticket 2 weeks ahead of the date you want to fly. There's no way you can find a cheap ticket in short time.
