I have a compaq laptop and a sansui tv I want to watch my dvd's on my tv but I am clueless as to where to start.

What is the model of laptop?

If it has an S-Video port, you need to get an S-Video cable. Hook one end into the S-Video port and another end into a composite cable. Then plug the composite cable into the TV based on its color (red into red, yellow into yellow, white into white). Put the other yellow end into your computer's microphone port. Then close the lid and open it again to reset the computer monitor. It should work.
