Most likely, if the power was completely shut down, (both electricity and battery), then what you were doing is gone.
Most often, if the power is constant to your computer, then it will remain on standby until the standby is either manually deactivated or the power is totally cut.
You did not give enough detail as to how the computer was remaining on standby for a month. Was it plugged into electricity and the computer not used for that period of time? I don't know of any computer battery that would last (even on standby) for a complete month without going dead... in which case, the complete power supply would have possibly been cut.
So, in short, you didn't give quite enough info to give you a solid answer. The best that I can tell you is if the battery is removed and the electric plug is pulled, then standby will most often be cancelled.
...either way, it sure looks like a lesson learned the hard way !
:-)
Can't you just shut down instead of stand by?
I don't know if you have XP or Vista but both of them have the option to turn it off completely.
so if you have windows vista look on this pic http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Shut-Down-Alternatives-in-Windows-Vista-2.png
(copy the url and paste it in your browser address bar)
click that arrow and then shut down and everything that you have on your pc will close and the pc will completely turn off.

Laptop switching off
right so, we have this laptop and when you click on the off button or close it, it standsby and when you open it, all your programmes continue from where they were..
so I was on msn and myspace and I had some convos going on which I would NOT like my...
parents to see..
the computer completely f**ked up and the screen went black, and all I could move was the mouse, when I pressed the off button it only went on standby..
and because this comp is in ireland my dads going to go there, and want to use the laptop...
so if it was on standby for about a month will it of switched off completely so my msn convos ect get shut down?
because if he switches it on and see's my msn convos I die.
HELP? im getting paranoid.
