Labeled with borderline personality disorder

LalaLena Asked by lalalena about 1 year ago, 6 answers.

Labelled for life, what do I do?
I was recently diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. I am extremely embarassed by it. It makes me feel ugly and unhuman. I hate telling anyone about it, but people who are close to me or want to be close to me...

want to know. As soon as someone finds out they look up the definition of bdp and say kathlene IS bdp like it is my IDENTITY! it feels horrible. I hate myself.. I hate telling people. I am tired of being judged. What do I do? Is it wrong just to not tell anyone I have it?

its not wrong at all to not want to tell anybody about it,you dont have to, and you shoudnt feel unhuman at all, Why do people have to know you have it? they dont, if you choose to tel people than its your choice I dont think your being judged, I must admit I did look it up to see what it was as I've not heard of it, its just people dont really have an understanding of it I guess, an people are curious as to what it is as I was ,thats why I looked it up, and if your in school its just another thing to gossip about, I say old your head high an try not 2 worey x sophie-lea x

borderline personality disorder

A personality disorder marked by a long-standing pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, behavior, mood, and self-image that can interfere with social or occupational functioning or cause extreme emotional distress.

I, too, had to look it up, so I went ahead and posted it above so that others can see what it is.

You shouldn't worry about it. I think there are many, many people who fit that category but simply haven't been diagnosed professionally. We all have things about us that make us a little different. That doesn't make us bad or inferior. You have an advantage in that you know things about yourself that help you to deal with the world. Those of us who don't know just muddle along.

lol Im bpd as well and I've made it to the right old age of 28. dont worry about being judged hon. everyone judges everyone else regardless of whether we like it or not. we are judged by appearance, the company we keep, our past, our occupations, our choices. when it all boils down and you think about just how many things or times we are judged by does it really matter adding one more? the choice of divulging this information is up to you. if you feel you'll be judged negatively no one is making you tell anyone. you may have been diagnosed with a mental illness, but you ARE NOT the mental illness. simple as that. youre still a person capable of caring and making descisions. this is just one tiny aspect of who you are, it does not define you unless you let it. if you need to talk to someone who knows what its like you can message me.

And this is why a lot of psychologists dont believe in labels. You dont need to tell people about it, it is really none of their business. When you feel comfortable you could tell people, but really there's no rule that says you must. Also, I'd get a second opinion, psychiatrists and psychologists disagree about diagnoses all the time...

Would you be embarrassed if you had diabetes? Or any other disorder that is out of your hands? Would you judge a friend if he or she had it?

I have it too and I feel the same, inhuman, it feels like a huge part of me, I can't separate it from my true self but. like me, to keep going it's best to believe that there is a true self that is buried underneath such an unstable image of everything
