Just wondering...

Me in thought... Asked by erasmus27 2 months ago, 7 answers.

I know I am supposed to ask stuff on this website but I just wanted to share an opinion I have of some REALLY stupid things I have just recently read on this site. First off why are people coming to a website like this to learn how to hack into ANYTHING??? Are people in society really that dense? Let's see. Things I've read in the last 15 minutes. How do I hack? Then he/she changed it to how do I mod video games. Wow. Let's move on shall we? How do I hack a website? Are you serious? Oh, another great one was How do I hack into SOMEONE's account? I don't get people. How come people want to take a good thing (like this site) and destroy it for everyone else? I don't get it. Why do people want to mess up something like Myspace? It's a social networking forum for crying out loud. Why do people want to destroy that? I know why. I'm just asking these things to get people to start thinking.

HACKING is illegal. It is a FEDERAL OFFENSE!!! Not only that, but it is wrong. Morally wrong. You are trying to go into someone's private affairs and, regardless of your reasons, (except if you are married and like to 'date online'), they won't be good ones. It seems that no one really respects people anymore. No one really has any type of moral values anymore. Kids say the most vulgar things in online games. Men go into chatrooms online (like in Yahoo or AIM) and go trolling for sex. It's sad.

You have full grown men hitting on young underage minors online. Ew. I know this goes far from what I originally started to talk about but look at what I am talking about. Things that are wrong in society. We have great things online that are fun for EVERYONE to enjoy. This site has moderators. Good thing but, it could end up being something that gets this site shut down later. You have social networks like Myspace, FaceBook, etc, that are starting to get porn invovled. It's ruining a good thing. Free email clients like Yahoo, AOL, etc, where porn bots are hitting those as well. Chatrooms used to be filled with people actually talking about stuff. Now, what happens? Most often then not a woman that wandered into the room that has 40 horny guys in it, will get hit on. In private. She will get harassed. So, I get into a chatroom and make fun of the guys who make the pathetic attempts at cyber sex. Guess what people? It's MAS*URBAT*ON!!! Just with an audience.

But, to sum up, these things used to be great things. Now they kind of suck. Don't do that to this site. And, oh yes, it could happen. This site could get ruined. What if a lot more people start asking questions about drug manufacturing, explosive making, hacking into data bases and computers, and the list goes on and on. What if, then, the FBI gets involved and deems this site to be something like the Anarchist Cookbook? They will shut this site down. Yes, I do realize and understand that this site is well-moderated. However, the Anarchist Cookbook is information protected by The Constution. Freedom of Speech. Can you find tha Anarchist Cookbook online anymore? Well, if you can find it, then goto it, and access the site, your IP address will get logged inside a federal data base and they will follow you all over the internet. Isn't that illegal? Well, no. You gave them reasons to believe you are a possible threat to the safety and well-being of the United States. You could be a terrorist cell. Who knows anymore.

Don't screw up this site. I hope a lot of people read this and help keep the stupid crap down to a minimum. I understand people don't care. But, would it hurt to care a little to keep this site going? Just wondering.

I did read all of that (and if you read the "about" page, you'll note I'm one of the founders / owners) and yes, we have moderators (we call them advisors, just to confuse people) and this helps a great deal.

The "report abuse" links also help a huge deal, as it results in us being able to tackle things that might have been missed, otherwise.

We do try to review everything we can - but the fact is, we can't. We used to be able to, however, with 72K+ visitors on a busy down now, and almost 100K members...well, it's simply not possible.

For the record, we're treated one way because we dont' pre-screen all content. If we did, there would be a different set of laws, rules, etc. Since we let anybody post anything (within reason) that doesn't violate the terms of use (link in footer) then we're regulated by the same set of laws as similar web sites...there are 5-6 that are bigger than us, that have similar features (nope, not facebook / myspace - stuff like Yahoo Answers, etc).

...why mention all this? Well, each site has the same problem at "scale" eg, when you reach the tipping point and gain a lot more user activity. We're working hard on the issue to try to keep quality as high as possible while the site grows, and after 5.5 years of running it, it's still a struggle to do so.

Caring - and taking an interest - in the site is a huge deal, and just being a member who cars & uses the tools provided helps make a big difference.

That was magnificent erasmus, oh and about the cookbook it's a lot easier to find than I think you realize... Anyway I've said many things about a few of the topics you touched on and have been told they're doing the best they can to avoid those type of situations...

But again, well said!

Yes, there are "all kinds" out there...spoilers...here are some tips for safe passwords: How complex does a password have to be in order to provide a sense of security? The answer to this question really depends on the possible characters that comprise the password, and how many characters the password contains.
If you only use the 26 characters of the English alphabet and your password is only 2 characters long, then you have only 676 (26 to the power of 2) possible passwords. A password-cracking computer program can guess any password of this length that you create from two letters in a fraction of a second.
If you choose your password from both lowercase and uppercase characters, numbers, the ten number keys, and the 32 special characters on your keyboard, such as the comma and the asterisk, then the number of distinct passwords increases to 9,216 (96 to the power of 2), which is still a low number.
However, if you make sure that the password consists of at least 7 characters, then the number of possible combinations increases to over 75 trillion, or to be exact -- 75,144,747,810,816 (96 to the power of 7). It would take a hacker over 2,300 years to try every possible combination if the password-cracking program tried 1,000 possible passwords every second.
Using a very powerful computer that tried one million passwords every second, it would still take 2.3 years. If you change your password every month or two, the password will most likely be different by the time the hacker has cracked it.
Good luck...
