Well, Jon had dreams of a family and quickly found himself over his head with more on his plate than he bargained for and the best years of his life spent looking after a squealing, pooping brood. He also realized that the bombshell dream girl he married was an emotionally controlling harpy who cared more about the brass ring and exploiting her children for media time than her marriage.

Meanwhile, Kate grew increasingly frustrated being married to a spineless simpleton who didn't even have the backbone to stand up for himself while being ridiculed on national tv, so she invested more and more of her time and energy into her career (as it were). When questions of intimacy were raised, she found it easier to allow Jon the occasional dalliance than pretend to care about someone she didn't respect.
