I've been joining bands since I was in middle school. I've left bands for reasons concerning creative differences, the band just breaking up, and not being able to get along with some other members. Right now, I'm out of college and I've joined my 9th band as a singer. And sure... sometimes, it does seem to be discouraging because you may not be getting much done and it seems a far cry from being the next My Chemical Romance, but if you really love being in a band and making music that's where you belong. Just keep in mind that you have to be realistic about it. You shouldn't bank on the idea that you have to become famous to be a good band, that you'll be able to make a career out of it, etc... who knows, you MAY actually get somewhere with your band, but it's best to just be in a band now because you enjoy making music. What you enjoy doing is never stupid, it's what you enjoy.
You might look at the career of George Harrison for a different perspective.
He referred to the Beatles as the other band he was in.
His greatest accomplishment may have been in the assembling of The Traveling Wilburys. All members were accomplished artist.
Getting along and respecting one another and laying aside their identities.
Kiss set aside it's identity with make up.
Ozzie and Ted Nugent and Joe Walsh borrowed from vaudeville routines and comics.
You Tube has a good Walsh interview with David Letterman. He borrowed his comic routine from ???. You may have seen the character on black and white television.
By all means...If you enjoy it. Do it.
If you like rock... It seems the more successful brought in other skills.
Blues...The Stones George Harrison...country Lots of people had roots in gospel.
Queen drew from classical disciplines.
As Joe Walsh says...keep it simple.
